NOTE: The School's Technology/Internet Usage Policy supercedes this document. |
 |
Technology is a powerful learning tool that brings the world into the classroom, and it provides the greatest benefit when it is infused into the curriculum rather than being taught as a separate set of skills. If used properly, technology should become an integral component of the classroom environment just like any other available resource (books, paper, pens, and pencils); however, technology does require a new set of literacies that students must master in order to use it effectively (Leu, Leu, and Coriro, p).
Nevertheless, I do not directly teach technology skills, but I rely on collaboration between students and providing tips and tutorials when appropriate to accomplish specific tasks.

Acceptable Usage |
You must have permission to use the computers, and you must be directly supervised at all times.
Computers may only be used for educational/ school related purposes: research, resources, and collaboration for academic purposes.
If you accidentally come across an inappropriate or illegal site, close your browser and notify an adult immediately. If it truly was an accident and you took these actions, you did the right thing, and you will not be in trouble. |
Prohibited Activities |
Copyright Violations: Always give full credit and properly cite where you received your information. The two most common violations by students are copying and pasting text from an existing web page to pass off as their work, and using photos without giving credit.
Illegal or Inappropriate Sites: Examples of sites to avoid: gaming, gambling, chatting, friend's personal web pages, 'slam' pages, adult sites, music swapping, etc.
Violent/ Inappropriate Language and/or Threats: Messages that suggest any type of violence or threats will not be tolerated. |
Netiquette |
Electronic communication does not allow for facial expressions or body language, so messages meant in a joking manner are often misinterpreted. Be very careful of the wording you use in your messages.
Use proper language: avoid too much slang and do not use obscenities.
All Caps and Highlighted Text are conveyed as yelling-- use them carefully.

Internet Safety is a major concern. Being aware is the key.
Personal Safety |
Predators and Terrorists are out there: Be Aware! A person asking you many questions might just be curious or they might be gathering information. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't. Notify an adult immediately.
Never give out your full name, address, or telephone number on the Internet. If a name is required, only provide your first name or a pseudonym (fake name) and your school.
Never agree to meet anyone you meet on-line.
|
Network Safety |
Hackers are out there: Be Aware!
Never open an attachment from someone you do not know. It might contain a virus.
Avoid visiting suspect sites (See 'illegal or inappropriate sites' above.)

 |
Use of the Internet and technology is a privilege and not a right. Inappropriate use of technology will result in students having their computer privileges revoked. Refer to Policies and Procedures for an outline of consequences for inappropriate student behavior. |
