Research has proven that homework helps students learn by extending learning beyond the school day. (Marzano, Pickering, and Pollack, p. 61)
Homework is assigned to:

Review, revise, and reinforce work done in class.
-
Develop good study habits and skills.
-
Create skills necessary for all life-long learners by promoting independent learning.
-
Prepare for future classes.
-
Connect parents to what is happening in the classroom.
|
 |
-
Take responsibility for completing your own homework by the due date.
-
Learn to manage your time between homework, friends, interests, and extra-curricular activities.
-
Do as much of your homework as you can by yourself; if you need help, you must ask.
-
Plan to do your homework the day it is assigned.
-
Set aside a consistent time and place for doing homework.

Parents play a positive role in homework by:

Encouraging their child to work independently.
-
Letting the teacher know if their child is experiencing continual difficulties completing homework assignments, or inquiring if their child never has homework.
-
Helping to create an environment that allows their child to be comfortable yet productive.
-
Monitoring disruptions during homework (i.e. telephone calls, television viewing, friends).
-
Reviewing their child's completed homework.
-
Regularly monitoring what is going on in class by checking the table below.
